Synopsis up to the above picture: One day walking along the deserted beach at Portobello on a cold March day, a scientist in late Victorian Edinburgh, David was caught by a freak wave. As he stumbled he saw a diminutive woman being swept out. He dives in fully-clothed and just saves her. David is strong and he gets them both back to the shore. As a scientist his first instinct is to examine the phenomenon. As he probes her limp, unconscious body, she begins to stir and he realises that he is frightening her and that they both risk dying of cold. He stops and rushes back with her to his laboratory where he shyly removes their wet clothes (he had pawned his spare set to finance his work) and provides her with a fine silk handkerchief - a last physical memory of his mother, and covers himself in a bed sheet and stays awake so she can lay on his belly for warmth.

The following day their clothes are dry enough for them to wear. She is human and her name is Alexandra and she herself is a scientist/alchemist in her world. They begin gentle collaborative non-invasive experimentation from which in the ensuing weeks they both determine that she has slipped through another dimension and that the process of changing had created a field around her in which relative a-space had collapsed - enabling her to live as a tiny person in David's world in spite of surface tension, etc... Their discoveries could have all sorts of scientific and technical implications.

Working with David and feeling his dedication to knowledge and the betterment of humanity, but most of all to her in returning her home, she begins to fall in love with both his beautiful mind and powerful body. 

One night, David had been working all through - in the heat of his laboratory trying to find a way back for Alexandra to her own dimension. As David lay slumped with exhaustion and Alex climbed up on him and wondered how could she tell him that his work was in vane...that she did not want to return 'home'.... She wanted to stay here with him...But, how could he return love to such an insignificant little thing as her? Perhaps she should just follow his lead, go home and try to forget about him, obviously nothing but harm could ensue from her opening her heart to him...

I've started to reprise the dimension crossing theme, although Ff and less romantic and I understand the appeal of David as a man, here
